KAYOKOYUKI is delighted to present the third solo exhibition of Yutaka Nozawa “Still Life”. In addition, a talk event to commemorate the release of his photobook →□← (published by oar press) will be held, and we warmly invite you to join us for this occasion.
Nozawa works across multiple media, including painting, photography, and video, creating works that subtly alter ordinary scenes from daily life to craft unique and humorous landscapes. In his work, small surprises are scattered throughout, where different times, spaces, and dimensions exist, intersecting and overlapping to create a cohesive whole. When you step into Nozawa's playfully constructed exhibition space, you are compelled to move back and forth between reality and illusion, inevitably finding yourself lost in a slightly different world.
The series CANVAS canvas, composed of paintings and photographs, plays with the repeated motif of the canvas, which plays a crucial role in Nozawa's work. A canvas, of course, serves as the support for painting, but in Nozawa’s work, it is both a support and a motif. In CANVAS canvas, Nozawa treats the canvas as a motif, creating two kinds of "still lifes" in painting and photography. The white canvas depicted in the painting (whether hung on the wall or placed on the floor) is the canvas itself, while the painting is then transferred to the same location and becomes the motif for a photographic "still life". The place where the painting is created or the photo is taken serves as a medium for traversing different times and spaces, and the viewer, alongside the artwork, will wander through this intersecting time and space.
The exhibition title "Still Life" is recalled by CANVAS canvas. Nozawa, who began with oil painting, says, "Painting is still something special to me." In his reconstracted "Still Life" works, where the canvas is positioned at the center of the composition and reconstructed in Nozawa’s own distinctive way, one can perhaps glimpse the origins of his creative process.
Yutaka Nozawa was born in 1983 in Shizuoka, Japan, and currently lives and works there accordingly. He received his B.F.A. from Tokyo Zokei University, Tokyo, and his M.F.A from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Tokyo. He also received his M.F.A in Photography from IED Madrid.
