PUGMENT　my clothes　2015

KAYOKOYUKI is pleased to announce the group exhibition "New Rube Goldberg Machine" with the artist ERIKO MUKAI, PUGMENT, KENTA COBAYASHI and HARUCHI OSAKI, curated by RIKU IIOKA.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a name of the apparatus which acts as a substitution for daily tasks through a chain reaction of a contraption as drawn by Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist as well as an inventor, during the 1910s. The mechanism incorporates humans and animals and illustrates in a delusional fashion the modern society where mechanization is constantly progressing. Through a chain reaction of ecological reflex responses and physical phenomena which are accompanied by accidentalness, daily tasks such as “open an umbrella” and “keep reminding me to deliver a letter to my wife” are substituted in a circuitous way.

At the time the Rube Goldberg machine was drawn, when the computer was not yet invented, machines were envisioned through very concrete ideas.
However, today, we are living in a chain of invisible, abstract mechanisms of which is impossible to obtain an overview. Several aspects of the contemporary environment that surrounds us, such as digital space, financial system, and ecosystem, will be covered in this exhibition which sometimes involves flights of fancy.
